Pavlos Kozalidis

Pavlos Kozalidis was born in Piraeus in 1961 and grew up in Canada, where his family immigrated when he was seven. In the late 1980s he began to dabble in photography, initially as an amateur, and upon his return to Athens he decided to devote himself systematically to the medium.

For more than twenty years he traveled to Asia, Africa, South and Central America, searching for the essence of man through his images. A special place in his work is occupied by the Black Sea region (Turkey, Georgia, Ukraine, Russia), where he searched for his family roots. There he recorded the life of the Greeks of Pontic origin who still preserve their language and customs. This work was presented in his first solo exhibition “Searching for the Lost Homeland” (Benaki Museum, 2008).

From 1989 to 2012, he traveled systematically to China, researching its culture, everyday life, and the remnants of the Cultural Revolution. His inspiration began in his childhood in Canada, where the image of Mao and the memory of a classmate from China paved the way for a relationship of respect and admiration that continues to this day. His photographs offer a unique journey into the contrasting world of China, through a personal gaze cultivated over more than thirty years. This work was presented in the exhibition “The House of Butterflies” (Benaki Museum, 2022).
